What is Botox used for?

You may be familiar with the word Botox. A product name derived from Botulinum Toxin, a drug that can be injected into your skin to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It works by blocking nerve impulses and temporarily relaxing the muscles in the treatment area, preventing muscle contraction, which has the effect of smoothing out lines and wrinkles. Since the facial muscles are relaxed and not moving as often, lines and wrinkles in the skin are not being constantly reinforced as they would when the muscles regularly contract.
Botox is a toxin produced by bacteria known as clostridium botulinum which needs to be administered in carefully controlled doses by trained medical professionals and has been proven to be effective in smoothing and preventing further wrinkles and lines such as crows feet and frown lines. Botox has also been proven to treat other ailments such as migraines and excessive sweating.

How Botox Works

Botox disrupts the signals sent from your nerves to your muscles. These signals tell your muscles to contract, and with the muscle contraction the overlying skin is bunched up and folded which over time causes lines and wrinkles. When we are younger our skin has the elasticity to bounce back and naturally smooth out these lines but with age and increase in laxity of our skin, these lines become more permanent.
Botox stops your nervous system in the treatment area from releasing acetylcholine, the chemical messenger that instructs your muscles to contract and therefore stops your skin from being excessively folded as we move our facial muscles, which helps smooth existing lines and helps prevent further wrinkles being created.
While its function as a muscle relaxant makes Botox a popular aesthetic treatment, it can also be used to reduce neck, shoulder and other muscle spasms. It’s sometimes used to help stroke patients to control involuntary twitching and can also help correct crossed eyes. Doctors occasionally prescribe it for cerebral palsy, hay fever or to remedy forced contractions in the jaw, tongue, face, or vocal chords.
Another effect of Botox is in helping to reduce hyperhidrosis, better known as excessive sweating. Our bodies perspire to cool us down when we’re overheated, whether it’s a result of nerves, intense exercise or outside temperature but some people suffer from the body producing too much sweat than is needed for cooling. Botox can reduce excessive underarm sweating, which is a real confidence affecting issue for many people.

Combined treatments for best results

At Epilight New Skin Clinic, our anti-wrinkle treatments may involve both muscle relaxant injections and injectable dermal fillers. Our treatments are quick – as little as ten minutes per visit and carried out by an expert aesthetic nurse with over 15 years experience. Our treatments are proven to be effective for frown lines and worry lines, eyebrow lifts and crows feet and effects last up to 3 or 4 months.

Apart from skin cell elasticity and relaxed muscles, there’s one other thing that keeps our skin soft, smooth, and supple: water. Healthy, hydrated cells look younger for longer, and our cells hold this water thanks to a naturally produced substance called HA – Hyaluronic Acid. We have lots of it as chubby new-borns, but we ‘shed’ about 1% per year, meaning we gradually lose the ability to attract and hold water in our cells.

With our cells starved of moisture, our skin becomes drier, weaker and more lined. Dermal fillers help us restore our HA deficiency for younger-looking skin. We use the award-winning Belotero brand of fillers, coupled with muscle-relaxing treatments to achieve natural, fresh, younger looking results.
