Getting rid of hair can be painful. Whether you’re plucking a stray grey hair or waxing your legs, it hurts. Fortunately, modern technology has literally taken the pain away from laser hair removal – at least when you use Soprano Ice, a multiple award winning, pain-free, FDA approved hair removal laser. They’ve even branded it SHR – Super Hair Removal.
Lasers work to permanently reduce hair growth by using a concentrated beam of light to heat up the hair follicle to a temperature where it then dies. And yes, that does sound painful, because this creates bursts of extreme heat on the skin. However, the latest, modern hair-removing lasers – and Soprano Ice in particular – cools the surface of your skin, using a sapphire crystal tip, while this intense heat is killing hair follicles at the root. The sapphire crystal tip is cooled to -3C.
This means that while your subcutaneous tissue, where the hair follicles are located, is being treated, the surface of your skin stays cool and comfortable. It even feels a bit like a cool massage, according to many patients who have had Soprano Ice treatment. To further help keep your skin cool, your skin therapist will apply a cooling gel on the hair removal site before treatment begins.
Chilling the pain away
Thanks to this technology resulting in a safe, comfortable treatment, you are very unlikely to experience any itching or redness that is often caused by typical, older laser treatments. There is also no downtime, so you can visit on your lunch break and resume work straightaway, it’s the perfect lunchtime treatment. The fact that soprano Ice is a cool, pain-free treatment means that it is also kind and gentle when treating even the most sensitive areas such as underarms and bikini line.
Let’s look at some of the similarities and differences between regular laser treatments and Soprano Ice laser treatment.
|Regular lasers||Soprano Ice laser|
|Create heat on the skin which can hurt||Cool on the skin, virtually pain-free|
|Can cause redness, itchiness or even burns||No red patches or itchiness. Extremely low chance of side effects.|
|Small spots of hair follicles are cauterised individually, so sessions can take a long time and coverage can be patchy||Continuous ‘in-motion’ technology means large areas of follicles are treated at the same time, making treatment up to 50% faster and results in better coverage|
|Limited effectiveness on fine, light hair (especially redheads and blondes). Increased risks on darker skin tones.||Effective on fine and lighter hair. Safe to treat most skin tones, even darker skin.|
|Not advisable on tanned skin or acne||Safe on tanned skin and acne|
Soprano Ice’s biggest innovation is its patented “in-motion” technology. Usually, during laser hair removal, your therapist will treat each spot in the area individually before moving on to the next spot. With Soprano Ice, the hand piece is constantly moving up and down the treatment area as the laser fires very rapidly. This means they can target multiple follicles in a shorter period, so you finish faster, and coverage is better with no missed spots as the whole area is covered multiple times.
Thinning vs killing
At Epilight New Skin Clinics, we treat patients of all ages, races, and genders, meaning some have thick curls while others have light, fine hairs. Some patients want to remove all the hair on their bodies, while others just want a little thinning, especially for guys. Your desired results will define your treatment package and schedule. Thinning could take just 2 or 3 sessions, while full removal needs 6 to 10 depending on the area.
Why the difference in duration? Well, hair grows in three phases:
- Anagen – active growth phase
- Catagen – transition phase
- Telogen – resting phase
Hair growth cycles have 3 different phases as listed above. Lasers can only kill a hair follicle during the active anagen stage.
Because each hair strand grows at its own pace, only 15% to 20% of your hair is in the anagen stage at any one time. That’s why multiple treatments are needed to permanently reduce hair growth. We generally leave 4-6 weeks between sessions in order to let new hair follicles enter the Anagen stage before being treated again.
Quick and effective
It’s important to note that hair removal works by killing your follicles at the root, which prevents new hair growth. However, the hair itself remains standing after treatment, so your hair won’t be gone immediately. Typically, the dead roots will ‘drop’ their hair in about 7-14 days after treatment.
Soprano Ice is safe enough for use on your face, chin, neck, legs, and even your intimate areas. It’s FDA approved and certified and is safe and virtually pain-free even for bikini line hair removal.
Some patients worry larger treatment areas may take too long and be too uncomfortable but we can treat full legs in about half an hour, and a whole hairy back takes roughly the same amount of time. And because the laser stays in-motion the entire session, the laser treatment covers all parts of the skin evenly, so your results are smoother and more thorough.
No pain more gain
You’ll often hear Soprano Ice being described as ‘virtually painless’. Some patients have compared it to ‘a cool massage’ and others have said on a scale of 1 to 10, the pain levels of Soprano Ice are only just about a 1. The best part is that you can go straight back to work (or to your daily activities) after treatment with no downtime or discomfort.
